History of Caritas Health Shield
The head office of Caritas Health Shield was formerly called ECCOI Building. You will see old letterheads of Caritas with the ECCOI building address.
According to our research, ECCOI was Eastern Construction Company, Inc. ("ECCOI"). The former ECCOI building is now named Caritas Health Shield Head Office located at E. Rodriguez Sr. Ave., Brgy. Tatalon, Quezon City.
According to court documents, Caritas Health Shield started in 1995. It was first named as Health Shield and was headed by doctors.
On December 1998, it was renamed as Caritas Health Shield. Court records show that the incorporators of the new company were Mr. Geoffrey Martinez, Mr. Luciano Abia and Atty. Manuel Reyes.
All of the incorporators were from the failed pre-need Pacific Plans. Mr. Martinez was the EVP for Finance of Pacific Plans. Mr. Abia was Senior Assistant Vice-President, Metro Manila Marketing Division while Atty. Manuel Reyes was the Head of the Legal Department of Pacific Plans.
The new company recruited Mr. Agripino Molina, also a Pacific Plans alumnus. There was even a case between Mr. Molina and Pacific Plans. Mr. Molina won the case last 2006.
On 2015, Mr. Geoffrey Martinez stepped down from the company and Atty. Teodoro Jumamil replaced him. Jumamil only lasted for a little more than a year. Afterwards, he too stepped down and was replaced by Mr. Ronnie Collado.
What's the Difference between Caritas Manila and Caritas Health Shield?
Caritas Manila is oftentimes confused with Caritas Health Shield. Below is the statement from Caritas Manila:
“Caritas” has led to public confusion that they are in anyway connected to the health care provider. For instance, the charitable institution has been receiving complaints of spam text messages, mistaken emails and newspaper articles. Caritas Manila also claimed that Caritas Health Shield Inc. violated Section 18 of the Corporation Code arguing that the use of the said name infringes its trade name. Furthermore, it emphasizes that the unlawful use of the word “Caritas” for medical health services has damaged its public image as a non-profit charitable institution.
Caritas Manila and Caritas Health Shield
Caritas Manila is the original Caritas having been incorporated on May 1977 whereas Caritas Health Shield was incorporated 17 years later. Caritas Manila has already won the case in court. We are now waiting on when will Caritas Health Shield change its name. But considering the church as merciful, and with the reputation of Caritas Health Shield, I think Caritas Health Shield will continue to infringe on its trade name till kingdom come.
SEC’s Office of the General Counsel, in its decision, acknowledged that Caritas Manila has the prior right over the name “Caritas” because it was incorporated on May 3, 1977 which is 18 years earlier than the incorporation of Caritas Health Shield Inc. on April 25, 1995. Also, it has been proven that the latter is confusingly similar with the corporate name of the complainant, based on the evidence presented by Caritas Manila. The SEC Office of the General Counsel then ordered Caritas Health Shield Inc. to change its corporate name by omitting the word “Caritas”.
Caritas Manila is the Social Services arm of the Catholic Church started by Rufino Cardinal Santos. Caritas Health Shield is a for-profit HMO started by Mr. Geoffrey Martinez.
These two Caritas organizations are TOTALLY unrelated.
Caritas Financial Plans
Caritas Financial Plans, Caritas Life Insurance, and Caritas Family College are companies under the Caritas Health Shield umbrella.
Caritas Financial Plans was incorporated and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 20, 2007, with an initial paid-up capital stock of P150M. On November 25, 2007 the Insurance Commission granted Caritas Financial Plans its Certificate of Authority to operate as a Pre-Need Company with a paid-up capital of P150M.
Caritas Financial Plans is a 100% subsidiary of CARITAS HEALTH SHIELD, INC., the umbrella organization of the Caritas Group of Companies.
Caritas Financial Plans started on July 2007. It is their pre-need and pension plan company. Since the founders started from pre-need they must have felt the need to create a pre-need company as well. This pre-need company was started at the height of the pre-need controversy. Kudos to them. They must have thought that the pre-need industry will flourish as it once was under College Assurance Plan (CAP) and Pacific Plans (PPI). How wrong they were.
Caritas Financial Plans has an identity crisis. They have several logos. These are their logos below. Which is which?

Caritas Life Insurance
Caritas Life Insurance was an addition to the group of companies of Caritas Health Shield.
Caritas Life is a 100% subsidiary of Caritas Health Shield, Inc., the umbrella organization of the Caritas Companies. From its modest beginnings in 1995, Caritas Health Shield now ranks as one of the country’s top providers of personalized health care services. With an asset base of over P8.1 Billion as of yearend 2014, Caritas Health Shield confidently provides customer-friendly medical services for all its privileged and ever-growing number of members.
Caritas Life Insurance is a subsidiary of Caritas Health Shield and started in 2003. Previously, Caritas Health Shield was outsourcing their life insurance with Sunlife. When they saw that they were remitting a lot of money to Sunlife, they created their own company and started Caritas Life Insurance.
Caritas Family College
Caritas Family Clinic was formerly called The Family Clinic, Inc. It was bought by Caritas Health Shield from the The Family Clinic owners. It's located at
1443 Dos Castillas St.,
Santa Cruz, Manila, 1003
Metro Manila, Philippines
If you visited Caritas Family College back then, it was an old ramshackle building waiting to be demolished. Caritas bought and whitewashed it. It looks like new now.

Caritas Health Shield Assets
Caritas has a 9.77% stake at Bank of Commerce. Details can be found here. We have no further information about other ownerships and partners of Caritas specifically banks. The only declaration we have is their stake at Bank of Commerce.
We will research further and in depth about Caritas Health Shield and update this when something comes up.
Trustee Banks
Bank secrecy is at work here. Caritas claims that they have an account in these places but the banks themselves do not disclose if they really have. Freedom of Information is not yet a law so there is really no way for us to check if they have money unless the banks themselves will disclose.
For members, this will be a blind faith in Caritas. I don't know but as a member, I should have an idea if the company is viable and liquid so they can still pay their obligations. Not unlike the Yuchengco-owned Pacific Plans who walked away and left their planholders hanging.
[caption id="attachment_440" align="alignnone" width="699"] this are the trustee banks of caritas health shield according to their website. our research did not take us anywhere though.[/caption]
Most banks offer trust accounts as an optional service. In a trust account, a trustee controls funds for the benefit of another party - an individual or a group. The bank trust account is a useful way to convey and control assets on behalf of a third-party owner.
Update: Mr. Geoffrey Martinez is in the 2009 Annual report of Bank of Commerce.
